I have been blessed with eyesight on par with the average bat. As a child of the 90’s, the media’s ‘bespectacled geek’ stereotype haunted me, and after years of donning glasses I wouldn’t allow my grandmother near, contact lenses became my Best Friend Forever.

In recent times, however, I am delighted to see ‘geek chic’ has exploded onto the scene, embraced by such designers as Paul Smith at London Fashion Week A/W 2011. Alexa Chung and Johnny Depp are among a host of ‘celebs’ giving the almighty nod of approval.

Excelling their worth as accessories of pure function, spectacles ooze confident style, and choosing the correct shape can really compliment facial features. ‘Upward winged’ shapes tend to detract from a less-than-perfect nose, while opting for a rectangular, horizontal style makes a round face appear longer and thinner.

Garments externalize an individual’s personality, and I am of the opinion that eyewear should be no different. Whether styled sharp and slick, or downright eccentric, should you decide to wear glasses, they should be nothing short of fabulous.1. BLACK EYEWEAR; Abbey H in Havana £137; www.blackeyewear.com
